Ancient Anvil & Agris Essence: Read Your Real Pity Progress
Ancient Anvil progress is useful, but it is not one giant account-wide pity bar. The exact gear group, target level, and current live rule set decide what your Agris Essence means and where the next failure lands.

Think of Essence as target history [1]
Every failed enhancement attempt grants Agris Essence for the target defined by that item's current grouping and enhancement level. When enough Essence is stored, Ancient Anvil activates and the next matching attempt receives a guaranteed success rate. It is progress, but only inside the bucket the game assigned.
That distinction matters after a downgrade. The official guide explains that Essence can remain tied to the higher target level and become visible again when the item returns to that target. Do not assume the meter vanished just because the gear moved down a stage.
Before comparing progress with another player, confirm both of you are looking at the same item family, reform state, and attempted enhancement level. Similar names do not prove shared Essence.
Check whether the gear shares a bucket [1]
Weapons and defense gear can share stored Essence inside defined groups when their enhancement levels match. Accessories are generally tracked by the specific item, with exceptions and reform rules called out by the official guide. This is why swapping from one weapon type to another may preserve progress while swapping accessories may not.
Use the in-game Ancient Anvil display as the final preflight. Select the exact target and verify the shown Essence before spending materials. If the meter is not what you expected, stop there; the click is cheaper to cancel than the assumption is to repair.
Do not merge separate entries in your own notes just because a community chart places them on the same row. Record the actual gear name, reform state, current level, target level, and meter shown in game.
Know what happens on success [1]
A normal success before the cap consumes the Agris Essence stored for that target. Once the cap has been reached, the guaranteed attempt still uses the usual enhancement materials for that item. Ancient Anvil removes the success roll; it does not make the attempt free.
The official guide also states that the guaranteed attempt does not consume your current enhancement chance. That is a big workflow cue: do not waste time hunting for a special 'pity stack' to make a guaranteed tap more guaranteed.
You still need the item ready, the required material in inventory, and any item-specific conditions satisfied. Treat a full meter as 'success secured on the matching attempt,' not 'reward mailed automatically.'
Cron taps still feed the Anvil—but cost is separate [1]
The official Ancient Anvil guide says Essence applies to normal attempts, Cron-protected attempts, and hammer attempts. That does not make those routes economically equal. Cron Stones change the failure protection shown for the item; Agris Essence tracks the failed attempt toward the guarantee.
Choose protection based on the displayed failure result and the value of preserving the current item state. Then count Anvil progress as part of the attempt's long-run value. Reversing that logic—using Crons only because a pity meter exists—can burn protection on a tap whose failure cost you were already willing to accept.
No universal fixed threshold belongs in this decision. The cap, Cron behavior, downgrade outcome, materials, and repair burden can differ by item and patch.
The July 30 live patch reduced the Agris Essence maximum for several Slumbering Origin enhancement steps. That means an older screenshot or calculator can overstate how many failures remain even when its system explanation is otherwise correct.
BDOForge intentionally does not repeat the old or new fixed thresholds here. The useful rule is stronger: whenever the item is patch-sensitive, trust the number displayed for the exact live target and use patch 10401 to explain why archived tables conflict.
If a saved plan was built before that patch, reopen every Slumbering target before the next session. Update the plan from the current meter rather than subtracting failures from the stale cap.
Patch 10451 introduced Ekleta and Apeiron accessories with item-specific enhancement, Agris Essence, durability, and Cron details. It is a live example of why 'all accessories work like this' is bad advice. Use the official Anvil grouping rules, then read the new item's own patch notes and enhancement preview.
This guide was reviewed through NA/EU PC patch 10514. That newest live patch is the canonical boundary for the audit; it does not turn a generic table into item evidence. When a future patch changes a cap or group, the newer live-region rule wins and the old recommendation must be refreshed.
Your final pre-tap line is simple: exact item, exact target, current Essence, current cap, displayed failure outcome, materials ready. If all six match the plan, send it.
