Enhancement decision
Cron, Valks, or Raw Tap? Make the Call Before You Click
Cron Stones, Advice of Valks, and a raw tap are not three buttons doing the same job. Your stack sets the chance; Cron protection changes the failure outcome; going raw means accepting the unprotected result shown for that exact item.

Split the decision into chance and protection [1]
Your current enhancement chance answers 'how likely is this attempt to succeed?' Advice of Valks is one way to load that chance when the current base chance allows it. Cron Stones answer a different question: 'what failure protection does this exact attempt receive?' A raw tap is the same success roll without Cron protection.
This framing fixes a lot of bad advice. 'Use Valks' is not the opposite of 'use Crons.' You can load an Advice of Valks and then make either a protected or unprotected attempt. You can also use a hand-built stack. The enhancement window combines these inputs, but your plan should keep them separate.
Never infer the failure behavior from item color or somebody else's clip. Select the exact item and target level, then read the live preview before choosing protection.
Choose a stack you are willing to spend [1]
Treat a failstack as a resource with an opportunity cost. The right stack is not simply the highest one available; it is the chance you are willing to consume if this item succeeds right now. Compare the displayed success rate with the time and materials required to rebuild that chance for a more important target.
The official guide's Another Adventurer's Choice view can show what other players recently used where enough data exists. Use that as context, not an order. It does not know your reserve stacks, Cron inventory, market access, or whether this target blocks the next month of progression.
If a fixed stack recommendation cannot name the patch, target item, enhancement level, and failure assumptions behind it, it is a vibe—not evidence.
Raw tap when you truly accept the miss [1]
Going raw is reasonable when the displayed failure penalty is affordable, the item can be rebuilt without derailing your account, and protecting the attempt would cost more than accepting that downside. It is not automatically brave, efficient, or reckless; it is an unprotected risk with a price you should write down first.
Price the whole miss: replacement item or downgrade recovery, max-durability repair, enhancement materials, stack movement, and the time before the gear is usable again. If the plan only works when the tap succeeds, you have not priced the raw attempt.
Set a stop point before clicking. 'One raw tap while I have a recovery set equipped' is a plan. 'I will keep going until it returns' is how a cheap miss becomes an account-wide silver sink.
Use Crons when preserving state beats their next-best use [1]
Cron protection earns its slot when the current item state is painful to lose and the live enhancement preview shows protection that matters. Compare the required Crons with the cost and downtime of the displayed failure result—not with the emotional value of seeing the item glow.
Cron behavior is item-specific. Protection may prevent one consequence while leaving another cost in place. Read every line in the enhancement window and confirm the Cron option is active before the attempt; an assumed checkbox is not protection.
Also count what those Crons could protect later. Spending a stockpile to defend a replaceable intermediate item can delay a target where a downgrade or destruction would be much harder to recover.
Do not let pity math hide tap cost [2]
Ancient Anvil grants Agris Essence on failed normal, Cron, and hammer attempts according to the official guide. That makes a miss less empty, but it does not erase the materials, protection, repairs, or opportunity cost spent to generate that Essence.
Compare two ledgers: cost per attempt and progress after failure. A Cron tap may preserve the gear while costing protection; a raw tap may save Crons while creating a larger recovery bill. Both can move the Anvil, so the meter alone cannot choose between them.
When the guaranteed attempt activates, normal materials are still required and your enhancement chance is not consumed. Save the valuable stack rather than trying to boost a guaranteed roll.
This decision workflow was reviewed through NA/EU PC patch 10514. The patch sets the freshness boundary; the current item preview still controls the attempt. Before every meaningful tap, say the six answers out loud or keep the window closed.
- Target: exact item and enhancement level.
- Chance: stack loaded and worth consuming on success.
- Failure: downgrade, destruction, durability, and recovery understood.
- Protection: Cron option active only if its benefit beats the cost.
- Pity: current Agris Essence bucket verified, not guessed from a chart.
- Stop: recovery kit and maximum number of attempts decided in advance.
